I love your reasoning, and after all life is a combination of our will and choices AND the cards we get dealt as we go along. I thought the ending was brilliant and sobering, and Jorg grew as a result of seeing how close he came to failing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529725084811715233.post-45213677062862081632016-01-19T05:00:26.763-08:002016-01-19T05:00:26.763-08:00I had an excellent time reading the Prince of Thor...I had an excellent time reading the Prince of Thorns, and that was the most catching novel I've ever read. Always thought it was his pure will, him believing that he will succeed, that turned all the odds to his favour.GuineaPiethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00731683556769279899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529725084811715233.post-60327419382930670042016-01-10T12:54:27.025-08:002016-01-10T12:54:27.025-08:00I blame GRRM for all this. Now, if you don't kill a lead character, you're wishy-washy or unrealistic. Pants to that. Sometimes people do live through tough situations. It's called being a badass.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529725084811715233.post-26720692209112134082016-01-10T11:57:36.314-08:002016-01-10T11:57:36.314-08:00This explanation and the reason I love your books ...This explanation and the reason I love your books have a common cause: you write intelligently. It's not just that the books are well-written, though they are. It's that you deliberately write complex, nuanced, flawed characters who do not fit into pre-conceived stereotypes. And they grow and change. I love that there is no simple description of any of your main characters. There is no clear moral to be learned from your stories. There are lessons that can be drawn, but they are often too subtle to be expressed any way other than the story that was just told.

I always hate criticism of books based on the "luck" of the character. Your lottery and D-day explanation are an excellent rebuttal to that criticism.

The deus ex machina accusation also doesn't seem to apply to the Thorns trilogy to me. Anyone who has read your books twice can see the clues leading up to plot twists. You don't simply reach a tricky plot point and change the rules of the story. Unreliable narrator, yes. Deus ex machina, no.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3529725084811715233.post-22095917476998994112016-01-10T09:11:50.898-08:002016-01-10T09:11:50.898-08:00Honestly I didn't really notice it in Prince o...Honestly I didn't really notice it in Prince of Thorns, it wasn't sticking out like a sore thumb, I see it as a normal thing. Besides Jorg did suffer a great deal of misery, it's not like he was always so lucky. I think it was well balanced overall.
