What this reminds me of is a Europa Universalis/Crusader Kings sort of map. Coincidence or deliberate homage, Mark?
I'm going to say 'not an homage' cos I don't know what those things are... but did you mean style or content?
Style. They are pausable real time strategy games. Here, let me show you what I mean: http://www.strategyplanet.com/panzergeneral/diverse/CK_Sea_provinces.jpg
I think the coastal hatching has been done in maps for centuries - we probably both drew it from the same well.
Also the way the provinces are delineated reminds me of that "Risk" like style. I like it a lot
Love the map! :) I do have one question - since it was 'Sir Makin of Trent'...where is Trent?
from Emperor of Thorns (Makin speaking):"My father had lands in Normardy, a small estate outside the town of Trent. I wasn’t the first son. I got married off to a rich man’s daughter. Her father and mine settled some acres on us and a house."
"tired of European-based fantasy settings? Hop on a boat and it's less than 15 miles to the shores of Africa!"--With this map reveal should we be expecting that location to play a role in the 3rd book - or will we just have to wait to find out?
From Emperor of Thorns:‘Very funny.’ I wiped the camel spit from my leg.My unnamed steed curled its lip, showing narrow and uneven teeth, then turned to face the backside of the camel ahead.‘When we’re through with this journey I plan to buy you and eat your liver,’ I told it.
:)Very excited - August cannot come quickly enough!
These are the best ive read, cant wait for emporer. Im a massive fan! Sorry to rave, just found this blog...
I just read the first chapter/excerpt of EoT from the link you posted on Twitter - I love it! I've printed it out for good measure...whereabouts is Kennick?
Baron Kennick rules/ruled over the Ken Marshes, the land (particularly the non-marsh part of it) is also known as Kennick. It's next to and west of Ancrath, and easiest to see on the Prince of Thorns map which is smaller scale.
hi mark whats the closest thing to empire tongue? my friend insists it is english, i said it was greek.
I've not really considered it :)It's not French (there are a few people speaking French in Prince of Fools). Europe was settled from the east so there may be touches of Russian :) Most likely some polyglot composed from a mix of European languages.
Hi Mark, quick question - Conaught/Connacht? It sprang to mind particularly as you mentioned their barbed spears - it got me thinking of Sláine and the gae bolgas....
Not consciously but I've read a lot of Sláine, so maybe :)
Impeccable taste, clearly! Many thanks for the trilogy, Jorg is one of the best antiheroes I have read in some time. More power to your writing.
I love your book, Mark Lawrence! Prince of Thorns is amazing! I have a question for you, this map "Emperor of Thorns" is a fiction or no? Because it looks like a map in the times of medieval europe. I'm waiting for the next book. Lucas Machado - Brazil
It's a fairly accurate map of what Europe would look like if the sea-level were 100m higher. This map help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJrCceCilFY
Serban... Why wasn't it Croatan or smtn? It is the part of the map where Croatia is currently.
