Hermann (Arminius), a Cheruscan chieftain, spearheaded the struggle to defend German tribes against a Roman imperial army. In time the Hermann story became a legend and Hermann a symbol of strength and unity in preserving freedom.

Andrzej Pityński's Mściciel (Avenger) is dedicated to Polish soldiers. This monument is also sometimes called the "Hussar" or "Polish Hussar" because the figure is that of a 16th century Polish Hussar in full armor. These elite heavy cavalrymen were known for their signature 'wings'.

  4. Here's a nice naked man bravely battling four baby genies, from Frogner Park, Oslo. We ought to see more of this kind of stuff in fantasy :) http://i.imgur.com/O4RDk.jpg

  5. Iceland, friends. That's where it's at. Their most notable monument is the sweetest Gothic church I've ever seen + a statue of Lief Erickson. http://speesh.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/leif-ericson.jpeg https://apetcher.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/img_6935.jpg

  6. 1300 years of Bulgaria in Shumen, Bulgaria. It's not one but a series of statues in a monument complex. Looks like the insides of Moria. http://www.kathmanduandbeyond.com/monument-1300-years-bulgaria-shumen-bulgaria/
