I found myself struggling so most of these suggestions come from Twitter. Thanks Twitter!
Yes, I know there's just one female author there. Suggest some alternatives?
EDIT 2018:
Here's one I saw on Facebook, attributed to "someone on Twitter" (who turns out to be @jpnadia). It seems to capture some of the suggestions in the comments below.
You could put Teresa Frohock where Hobb is and move Hobb a little to the left (Teresa is much more horror oriented than Hobb, I think
ReplyDeleteKate Elliott could be just below Martin and above Rothfuss.
right and below her, you can put Martha Wells
Around the Sanderson zone, you could put Judith Tarr
Juliet McKenna should be above Pratchett and below Abercrombie...
I can think of several female authors who fall into several categories, but the categories don't overlap properly.
ReplyDeleteFor example, Ellen Kushner fits into Lovers, Killers, and probably Jokers, but the only place where those three overlap also includes Soldiers, which doesn't fit. Seanan McGuire fits in Lovers, Jokers, Thrillers, and Killers, but those four only overlap in the middle.
In the downward facing arrow beneath GRRM, Lois McMaster Bujold. Between the 5 God's universe and the Sharing Knife, plus The Spirit Ring, she fits.
ReplyDeleteI personally know Myke Cole. He's a cool guy.
ReplyDeleteAmanda Downum: thrillers and horrors.
ReplyDeleteJacqueline Carey: lovers, thrillers, horrors
Ursula K. Le Guin - Builders.
ReplyDeleteFor female authors, Kameron Hurley could fit into Killers/Soldiers (missing Lovers but that would only be possible with Jokers)
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the coolest Venn diagrams I have seen. Yes, it can be nit-picked about simplifying things, but that is what a Venn is for. And I generally agree with these groupings, as I follow about 3/4 of these authors. Nice to see I like variety! And interesting that the so called "Grimdark" authors fall over the diagram.
ReplyDeleteI feel somewhat doubtful about the jokers part of this diagram, I wouldn't classify any of these other than Pratchett as being funny. For jokers, I would suggest Brust, Piers Anthony, Robert Asprin, Diana Wynn Jones. I don't see how any of them overlaps with either soldiers or lovers though. It's a puzzle.
ReplyDeleteFor the Soldier/Joker/Lover/Builder set I'd suggest Mark Gentle with Grunts! White Crow, Ash et al fitting into those segments nicely.
ReplyDeleteN.K. Jemisin prompted the person who did that one to fix the spelling of her name. You might substitute with the updated, correctly spelled version. It's in the same Twitter thread.
ReplyDeleteThe new version is by @jpnadia; here's the link (including the correction to Jemisin's name):
